In 2007, the Times of India highlighted Agarwal as India’s rising female aviator. She became India’s youngest female pilot to fly a Boeing-777 in 2014. Aggarwal gained attention for his role in saving the life of a passenger on a New York-bound flight in 2016. After a passenger complained of breathlessness, Zoya decided to return the flight and land at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. From there the passenger was taken to the hospital and after taking care of him, safely handed over to his family members and went back to work. This news spread like a fire and he got a lot of name and appreciation in the media.
As a precaution during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government of India launched the Vande Bharat Mission in May 2021 to evacuate approximately 14,808 Indians from twelve countries on sixty-four Air India flights. Zoya was selected by the airline to co-pilot the first repatriation flight.
Joya led an all-female crew on the inaugural flight from San Francisco to Bengaluru in 2021, which has proved to be one of the world’s longest non-stop air routes. In late December 2021, the crew made an appearance for the Republic Day special episode of Indian Idol. In the year 2020, Agarwal was inducted by the United Nations as a spokesperson for Generation Equality.
In August 2022, Agarwal was honored by the Aviation Museum of the San Francisco International Airport in the US for her career in aviation and promoting women’s empowerment.
In the year 2023, along with co-pilots R Someshwar, Sandeep Mukhedkar and Abhay Agarwal, Zoya Agarwal piloted Air India’s first Boeing 777 aircraft over the Hindu Kush mountain range. The route increased flight times to North America from one of Delhi’s most popular non-stop routes. Compared to the route taken since the closure of Afghan airspace to non-defense aircraft on 17 August 2022. The airline first started flying its Boeing 788 over the Hindu Kush mountain range in October.
