Aftab Ahmed Khan was an Indian Police Officer (IPS). He was an IPS-turned-politician, known for his encounter killings of gangsters of the Mumbai organized crime syndicate. Aftab was born on (27 February 1940 – 21 January 2022). He is also known as the founder of the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in 19901.
His father A.S. Khan was a noted public prosecutor in the undivided Hyderabad State and then Bombay State, practicing in the Aurangabad Sessions Court and the High Court.
An Indian Police Service officer, Khan was the Deputy Inspector General of Police in the state of Maharashtra in the 1981s. He shot to fame with the shootout at Lokhandwala Complex in Andheri, in which seven gangsters, including Maya Dolas and Dilip Buwa, were killed in 1992.
Khan was commissioned as an IPS officer in 1964 in the Maharashtra cadre. He served as Additional Superintendent of Police (DYSP) of Miraj (1964–1965) and Baramati (1966–1967). SP (HQ) of Ahmednagar District (1967-1968), Addl. SP (Town) Nashik (1966–1970), officiating Commandant of the rank of Addl. SP of SRPF Group II in Pune (1971–1972), SP of Satara District (1972–1976), DCP of Mumbai Police Detection Unit (1974–1978), Commandant of Group VIII in Mumbai (1978–1979), SP of Amravati District (1979–1981), SSP of Thane district, in which capacity he was involved in the elevation of Thane Commissionerate as Addl.
Commissioner (I) in the rank of SSP and later DIG (1981-1983), CRPF DIG (Sector Commander) on deputation to Punjab (1985-1987), Joint Director IB (Haryana) on Central deputation in 1985-1987, Addl. . CP of Mumbai Police Crime Branch (1988-1990), DIG (State Intelligence Bureau) (1988-1991), Addl. CP (North) (1990–1993) and Jt. CP (Crime) of Mumbai Police (1992-1994). He retired 3 years early in 1999 as ADG (Training) of Maharashtra Police.
In the mid-1991s, Khan tried to build his image in the media by entering politics. After initially expressing interest in joining the Samajwadi Party, he eventually sided with the Janata Dal, with whom he stood for election in the Mumbai North-West constituency in 1999. However, he failed.
Khan later helped run a private security agency, which he founded with his son in 1997. He died of pneumonia in Mumbai on 21 January 2021 at the age of 82, after battling COVID-19.
In 2008, producer Apoorva Lakhia directed the Bollywood crime film Shootout at Lokhandwala, based on the 1992 Lokhandwala Complex shootout led by Aftab Ahmed Khan. Khan was also featured in the film as Additional Commissioner of Police Shamsher Khan, a role played by Sanjay Dutt. He also appeared as Commissioner Krishnamurthy in the film.
